I thought I'd start a new discussion after reading the others. How about your investor stories, good and bad? The experiences of others may benefit us all, especially those of us that are pretty new to the world of investments.

All of my stories are horror stories about financial advisers that have turned out to be a bad move on my part. In trying to find a financial adviser that was impartial and offered good advice, I've had to learn the hard way that most are affiliated with some sort of product and have their own best interests at heart. Over the years I have lost more than gained thanks to some financial advisers. On the up side though, I have found one that gives good advice but lets me make my own decisions so any blame is mine. She knows her stuff and gives her opinion but doesn't push me. Can't get better than that!

There are plenty of those about unfortunately. I would never ask anyone affiliated to an institution for advice and would check out recommendations for independent ones. I've heard some horror stories too but learnt from a work colleague's mistake before I made it myself.

I was lucky and found one as soon as I started investing. I had heard good things about him and followed up on the feedback that I received from others. He has helped me greatly in the past. My bad story is that he moved so I am financial adviser-les at the minute and it's not good!

The horror stories of investors follow a pattern and are usually one of three things - financial advisers, not being able to buy stock in time to benefit from the price rise or stock crashes. I've never heard an investor go on about their good stories because the bad ones cut so much deeper. You always remember the bad over the good.

Too true! I can't really remember any of the successes that I have had, but I do remember one very real horror - Elan! One of the very few things that my adviser was wrong about. I lost a small fortune, but then again nobody could have predicted the turn stock would take because nobody would have predicted the death of a patient.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing. Looking back at it now, I'm not really surprised it crashed. The dramatic pattern of buying left it open to the equally dramatic crash, but at the time it was the last thing anybody expected.

I haven't really had any horror stories yet, but you're right bigspender - you really don't remember the good over the bad.

Human nature - the bad leaves more of an impression on most people than the good does, but that is why we learn from our mistakes. And let's face it, investors have more bd than good experiences on the whole anyway!

If you think about it though, bad stories aren't really that much of a big deal. For every bad story out there, at least one person will learn something about it, which means it has done its job. And if you do invest in the stock market and can't take a hit then you're on the wrong business.

True, you can learn from bad stories, but you feel your own keener than those of others. How about some good stories though? More heartwarming! If not good stories, how about some tips or advice?
